Alan Hutton isn’t sure if Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher would be willing to move to Tottenham during the summer transfer window.
The England international’s contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of next season and so far, no progress has been made over a new deal with Aston Villa and Spurs keen to secure his signature this summer [The Telegraph, 18 May].
Former Blues boss Mauricio Pochettinho had been keen to tie the central midfielder down to a new contract before his sacking in South London, but the Argentine’s exit could mean that Gallagher may be available when the window opens.
Although Hutton believes the 24-year-old would help strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s squad ahead of next season, he admits that it may be hard for the star to make the move to a rival considering his ties with Stamford Bridge.“Would he be a good signing? Absolutely, of course he would,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
He would come in and add competition. There’s a lot of competition already within there, but again, I think one or two like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg might move on and free up space.
He could play in there regularly, but do I think he’d make that swap between Chelsea and Tottenham? I’m not so sure because I think it has always been a hard one between the two clubs so I don’t know if that would happen.
They’re a rival, so to sell one of your top players who has been captain throughout the season to a rival, I don’t know how that would sit so I’m not sure it will happen.
If it did, he makes Spurs better.
Could Tottenham sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea in the summer transfer window? Postecoglou has made it clear that he wants to put his own stamp on this Spurs squad this summer and after a disappointing end to the season, most Tottenham fans will be relieved to hear there will be movement in and out of the club.
While most supporters will be pining for new options at the top end of the pitch, bolstering the midfield may be as big a priority for the Australian, especially with the likes of Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso set to depart when the window opens.
Gallagher would be a natural fit in terms of style of play if he made the move to North London, but not many players have crossed the Spurs-Chelsea divide in recent years and that may not change anytime soon.
If a deal can be struck, the Lilywhites would be wrong to not push for the 24-year-old’s signature, but negotiations with both the player and club could prove to be difficult.
