Rangers could face a difficult campaign next season if they fail to get their recruitment right in the summer.
Philippe Clement’s side were once again runners-up to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, finishing eight points behind their rivals, and also lost out in the Scottish Cup final at the weekend, with Adam Idah’s late goal enough to ensure Brendan Rodgers’ side lifted the trophy.
Sutton suggested Clement, who took over from Michael Beale in October, has ‘got every ounce out of a bang average Rangers group’ that, admittedly, wasn’t his own. The summer will provide the chance for the Belgian to recruit his own players, but his side, Sutton said, ‘will need a strong start to next season’ if they are to compete.
The issue, however, Sutton said, is that Rangers ‘can’t spend’ and Celtic will have a ‘massive advantage’ due to qualifying directly for the Champions League by way of winning the league.
While Sutton’s co-host Ian Ladyman was keen to mention Jack Butland’s error in the final, Sutton brushed off the criticism and offered his congratulations to Brendan Rodgers and his team.
