Everton have played host to a number of legends over the years, but a Premier League winner has now spoken out about how he probably shouldn’t have moved to Goodison Park.
The Toffees could only dream of winning a Premier League title right now given the current state at Goodison Park, with surviving relegation the norm in recent seasons.
Sean Dyche is under pressure after a string of results that don’t look awful on paper, but the performances were far from acceptable and lacked any positivity.
Everton currently sit three points above the relegation but face a tough run of games against a number of sides inside the top ten, so a managerial change could be on the cards unless things change.
The Friedkin Group have set up a review for Dyche once their takeover is complete, but if things get worse before the potential mid-November completion, then they may need to bring their plans forward.
Interestingly, it appears as if things weren’t so good for a Premier League winner when he decided to make the move to Merseyside, as he’s been speaking out recently.
Martin Keown admits he shouldn’t have joined Everton
Martin Keown is known for his spell at Arsenal where he played a part in the Invincibles, lifting the Premier League title three times in his illustrious career.
The central defender joined Everton from Aston Villa back in 1989, and made 108 appearances.
However, his time at Everton just wasn’t as enjoyable as he thought it might be, which has resulted in him speaking out about a little regret he has.
Talking on the Peter Crouch podcast, Martin Keown admitted that he probably shouldn’t have joined Everton as he had offers from Manchester United and Nottingham Forest at the time.
“I went to Everton, probably shouldn’t have gone to Everton, as Aston Villa were offering me like really low wages shall we say, but they were claiming it was the best offer.
“And then they offered three times more money on the last day, and I was like, well, where’s this come from? But we we need to find, who am I playing with?
“You might tell Man United, you might tell Derby, Forest, all the clubs I was in talks with, so I went to Everton.
Martin Keown’s career achievements
Martin Keown played 800 times for club and country in his 20-year career.
As previously mentioned, he is best known for his time at Arsenal where he won 10 trophies, including the 2003-04 Premier League, as part of the Invincibles.
However, during his time at Everton, he won the first of his 43 England caps, which he says was down to the support of the Everton fans (as per Liverpool Echo).
“I think it was partly down to the Everton fans who helped get me into that England squad,” he explained.
“They made their voices heard at a time when people were being tried out in the national side and I got my chance.
“The atmosphere was always superb at Goodison. Even though I played a lot of my career at Highbury I loved Goodison.
