Cameron Carter-Vickers was clearly gutted when he watched his backpass to Kasper Schmeichel roll into the Celtic net in last night’s Champions League draw with Club Brugge.
Carter-Vickers, who has been a rock for Celtic since joining the club three seasons ago, was a victim of an unusual mistake which put Brugge in the Celtic Park driving seat in the first half in Paradise last night.
However, Daizen Maeda ensured that the mistake didn’t end up too costly as his goal helped Celtic battle to a draw against Brugge and keep their hopes alive of making it out of the league phase.
But there is no doubt the American will be hurting but on hand to make him feel better was Celtic teammate, Alistair Johnston, who gave an alternative and brilliant view of how he saw the own goal against Club Brugge.

Speaking after the match, Johnston explained why he was ‘happy’ this happened to Carter-Vickers rather than anyone else in the Celtic team.
Johnston told BBC Sport Scotland, “When you want to play out from the backend there’s high pressure sometimes things are going to get a little lost in translations.
“He thought Kasper Schmeichel was one place, he wasn’t.
“It ended up being a great finish that Kasper couldn’t get to which is frustrating and unlucky but at the same time, I think he was fine for the rest of the match.
I think that he’s one of those guys that you don’t really need to have to worry about with that kind of stuff so I’m happy that if it had to happen to anyone, it was him.
“But no, he’ll be fine.

The Celtic boss was very philosophical about the whole episode. Drawing on his years of experience, Rodgers said Carter Vickers was ‘unfortunate’ and that these moments just happen in games.
The Celtic gaffer tipped Carter-Vickers to bounce back from the moment hailing the US defender’s ‘tough character’.
Celtic fans will not be too worried about the error as it’s very rare that the 26-year-old makes any mistakes whilst in the team.
It’s unfortunate that this particular error was in the biggest club competition in Europe in front of 60,000 Celtic supporters so maybe Johnston is right. Maybe it was better to happen to Carter-Vickers than any other Hoops player.
