Rangers and Celtic both had victories added to their accounts this weekend in the Premiership.
First up this weekend were the champions and they ran riot against Ross County. A star-studded first half inspired them to a 5-0 victory against Don Cowie’s side with Celtic now facing Aberdeen on Wednesday night.
Rangers were the Sunday lunchtime game on TV and it won’t be racing to the top of the highlights charts. After a swashbuckling thrashing of Nice in the Europa League on Thursday, a subdued 1-0 win against St Johnstone was clinched through an own goal by ex-midfielder Jason Holt.

Aberdeen may have an injury worry to contend with against Celtic – and the deputy is a man some Hoops fans may have forgotten all about. Ross Doohan is the back-up at Pittodrie, coming through the Celtic academy, having seven loan spells before leaving in 2022 permanently without much senior involvement. He’s been at Aberdeen since 2023.
Doohan replaced number one Dimitar Mitov in Aberdeen’s 1-1 draw against Hearts on Sunday and with Celtic coming on Wednesday, the Bulgarian’s status is unconfirmed, opening up a possible chance for Doohan to face his former side. Boss Jimmy Thelin said: “Let’s see , we need to make a real check on him first, but he couldn’t keep playing so we needed to change him.
“I want them to see exactly what it is first before I say something. Let’s see, but the good thing was Ross came in and did really well and he looked really prepared, so we have a good squad.”
GvB pay-off
Giovanni van Bronckhorst won five trophies as a player at Rangers. He also clinched a Scottish Cup as their manager and guided the club to a Europa League final before being sacked in 2022, replaced by Michael Beale.
His latest job has taken him to Turkish side Besiktas but he has also had the axe fall upon him there. It is claimed that for six months work, van Bronckhorst will pocket a cool £4.5 million. An eye-watering severance payment of £2 million for him personally and £1 million for his team of coaches is also included.
