They face each other on January 2 and it’s a must-win for Clement who has now failed to beat the Hoops in six attempts, a record fans won’t stand for if it gets any worse.
Former Hearts defender McGowan, who played against both teams for St Johnstone last season and is now locked in a title battle of his own at Livingston, reckons that in a one-off game, anything can happen. But over the course of a season, he reckons it’s glaringly obvious just how far ahead Celtic are.
He told the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast: “They’re not at the level to even compete with Celtic in anything. One-off games? Yeah, possibly. But as an overall squad over a campaign, it’s just clear to see how far ahead Celtic are, and as painful as that is to hear for a lot of Rangers fans, it’s just reality at the moment.
And Philippe Clement said that he doesn’t have those types of options off the bench.
