One of the hottest topics about Celtic and Rangers this season and for most of 2024 was about just how big the gap is between both clubs.

Celtic’s latest financial results show that the Parkhead club are head and shoulders above everyone in Scottish football in terms of their cash flow and earning power.

In terms of success on the pitch, the Hoops have been absolutely dominant. A quick glance at Celtic’s trophy history will prove that.

But on top of that, Celtic beat Rangers in the League Cup final this season and it caused the Bhoys to officially be crowned Scotland’s most successful club.

Which is why when a Rangers fan made a claim about his own club being better than Celtic, it is little wonder Marvin Bartley was left stunned trying to process it.

The Rangers fans suggested that because of the League Cup final and Glasgow Derby performance, his team were somehow better than Celtic’s despite the Ibrox side bottling it against Hibs at the weekend.

Bartley replied on Superscoreboard [1h 29m 45s], “I’m still lost on the point that Rangers are better. That’s not true, that is definitely not true.

“In terms of Scottish game, it’s getting better and more people are going to stadiums, and we’re seeing Tannadice has been full, and Aberdeen, Pittodrie has been full, it’s been absolutely brilliant.

Marvin Bartley says ‘there’s no chance’ Rangers are better than Celtic
Host of the show, Gordon Duncan pressed the point and asked that despite the positivity surrounding Scottish football and improved performances in the derby, did it mean Rangers were better than Celtic right now.

Bartley replied, “No. No, no, definitely not. And that’s the bit that can kind of confused me. So when you started speaking to me, I was kind of in the daze.

“But now, at this moment in time, yes, Rangers have done really well in the cup final. We know all about the penalty incident. They did really well at Ibrox to beat Celtic 3-0.

“But over the course of a season that [question] answers itself really. There’s no chance at this moment in time that Rangers are better than Celtic. It’s just not true.

Even the most committed Rangers fan would know that their club has a long way to go to compete with Celtic over the course of a full season.

The proof will be in the pudding this midweek when Rangers travel to Dundee on Thursday and Celtic take on Dundee United on Wednesday night.

If Celtic win and go 16 points clear, the reaction from the Ibrox club will determine whether or not they have the mentality, never mind the capability, to better than or equal to Celtic any time soon.
