Kasper Schmeichel wasn’t a happy man following the conclusion of Celtic’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.
Celtic suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their playoff encounter and now they face a tall order at the Allianz Arena.
The Celtic Park faithful were in full voice before the game and they were in dreamland when Nicolas Kuhn opened the scoring inside the first minute, but then the goal was chalked off for offside.
Brendan Rodgers would have been frustrated because the team didn’t help themselves in the first half and were too passive on the ball.
But, inside an hour, Michael Olise and Harry Kane’s goals saw Bayern with a comfortable lead and the home side fearing the worst.
That’s when Celtic appealed for a penalty…
Kasper Schmeichel slams referee for being against Celtic against Bayern Munich
After the game, Kasper Schmeichel was doing an interview for CBS Sports where he was stood alongside his dad.
The Manchester United legend wanted to put his son’s mind at ‘ease’ by showing him footage of that penalty claim.
When Schmeichel junior started watching back a replay of Dayot Upamecano’s challenge on Arne Engels, he was left shocked and stated it was a ‘clear penalty’.
Celtic’s number one also told his dad how the on-field referee Jesús Gil Manzano ‘didn’t like us’.
Before Kasper could begin his interview, he was reacting to a controversial penalty that was awarded to Club Brugge against Atalanta in the earlier game, before he started to speak about what happened in the game he played, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (12/02/25 at 10:35 pm).
“I don’t know what rules are in football anymore,” said Schmeichel after hearing an explanation as to why Club Brugge were awarded a pen against Atalanta.
“What’s a penalty and what isn’t a penalty? It’s really whatever the referee has woken up and felt that day it seems.”
Peter Schmeichel then spoke about the Celtic penalty claim: “Kasper actually claims that the penalty wasn’t given was a penalty. Do we have that angle to prove his mind at ease?”
Kasper responded: “It was more than that one decision. He didn’t like us today.” Before his dad added: “I want you to sleep tonight. Do we have that angle?”
Kasper then watches the penalty shout back and states: “He (the referee) didn’t see anything today. Apart from their corners.
“Oh my God, that looks like a clear penalty. If that happens at the other end, then it’s a penalty.
Everything is against Celtic ahead of second leg clash against Bayern Munich
If Celtic had lost 2-1 in Munich, then the feeling after the game would have been very different, but not this way around.
Yes, Celtic can now play with freedom because the task speaks for itself. Goals are needed and nothing else.
Perhaps that will help the team play with more ease and attacking intent, but let’s be honest, everything is against Rodgers’ side here.
Yes, Celtic have made progress in Europe this term, but they are yet to win an away game this season in the Champions League, whilst Bayern are unbeaten at home.
If Celtic get the job done here, then it will be spoken about for a very long time!
