It was a tough way to crash out of the Champions League for Celtic, but what a fight everyone put up.
Brendan Rodgers’ side headed to the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night trailing 2-1 from the first leg of their Champions League playoff tie.
There are some who expected Celtic to possibly crumble and suffer a heavy defeat, just like the Dortmund horror show in matchweek two.
But Celtic fought until the end against Munich, only for a stoppage-time Alphonso Davies goal to crush the hearts of those in green and white colours.
Despite playing a team that is being tipped to go a long way in this competition, they were probably lucky, not just to progress, but to progress in normal time after Nicolas Kuhn deservedly opened the scoring in the second half.
But that first-leg defeat, mainly the opening hour, was the killer for Celtic and now everyone licks their wounds as they head back to Glasgow.
Alan Shearer says Celtic ‘don’t deserve’ heartache of losing to Bayern Munich
Alan Shearer was working for Amazon Prime and he witnessed the second-leg action, including how Celtic ‘didn’t deserve’ to suffer such heartache right at the end.
The former England striker pointed out that Kasper Schmeichel made a ‘great’ save in the lead-up to Davies’ goal, but Cameron Carter-Vickers was so unlucky that he couldn’t clear it away.
Shearer explained how Rodgers should be ‘very, very proud’ of his players because they went toe-to-toe with one of the best in Europe.
“That is a great save (from Kasper Schmeichel), I think it’s Carter-Vickers, he is just trying to get that ball away,” said Shearer.
“Alphonso Davies is there to block it. Agony for Celtic. It goes into the back of the net. They don’t deserve it. They don’t deserve the hurt Celtic.
“You talk about leaving it late and heartbreak for Celtic. I know they have created a few chances this evening without playing anywhere near what they can play, Bayern Munich.
“But, when you leave it that late, the hurt and the pain for Celtic and their fans, you can feel it and for Brendan Rodgers. He can be very, very proud of his players.
“Big clubs and big teams, as we often say, when they don’t play well, they somehow have to find a way and Bayern Munich have done that. Even though they have left it so, so late.
Celtic post-Borussia Dortmund defeat
It wasn’t so long ago that Celtic were shipping seven to Borussia Dortmund and the knives were out because many thought it was the same old story.
That defeat stung and many were wondering how the Bhoys would bounce back.
