That defeat is going to sting the Celtic fans for a long time.
But one thing that can’t be argued is Celtic produced a performance to be proud of and they can hold their heads up high.
Bayern Munich scored a stoppage-time equaliser to progress into the last-16 and it was a cruel defeat for the Scottish champions.
As you can expect, Celtic fans are proud of their team and they understand that progress is being made in Europe.
The last time they were in Germany, Borussia Dortmund put seven past Celtic, yet compare that display to the one in Munich on Tuesday night and it’s night and day!
But there are some who just can’t see the bigger picture.
Jamie O’Hara slams Jason Cundy over Celtic comments after Bayern Munich progress
Jason Cundy has previously stuck the boot into Celtic and he was at it again after the game in Bavaria concluded.
His fellow talkSPORT pundit, Jamie O’Hara, told Cundy he is ‘out of order’ for mocking Celtic at the start of the show and labelling their performance as a ‘glorious failure’.
O’Hara expressed his surprise at how the Bhoys played and stated that ‘they deserve a little bit more credit’.
“He’s horrible,” said O’Hara to Cundy mocking Celtic. “You are out of order. They played brilliantly. How proud can you be if you are a Celtic fan? You (Cundy) are out of order. You are horrible.”
Cundy responded: “Football is horrible. It’s a cruel mistress. She is a cruel mistress. Just when you think you have them in the palm of your hands. Just when you think that things are going well. Bang. Things collapse around you.”
O’Hara added: “They did well Celtic. I mean, fair play to them. I thought they were fantastic.”
Cundy agreed: “Credit to Celtic. They didn’t take their chances in the first half. Wasted chances. Bayern were terrible. Celtic were brilliant. Yet, they come away with nothing. Absolutely nothing. Other than credit, what does credit give you? Yeah, well done. Pat on the back.”
O’Hara stated: “Yeah, but they have played Bayern Munich. They have gone to their own backyard and were 30 seconds away from winning away from home and it gets them to extra time. They put in a top performance. Some of the football they played. I think they deserve a little bit more than credit.”
Cundy then claimed: “They were the better side. But glorious failure. It’s a glorious failure. I am sorry but at this level.” O’Hara disagreed and told him ‘It’s not. They can be proud – They can tell me about the money spent and all of that.”
O’Hara responded: “It’s true, though.” Before Cundy continued: “But they showed that money against European royalty. They can go toe-to-toe. But the reality is that they come up short.”
O’Hara added: “Oooh, coming up short is harsh. Celtic are a huge football club. In terms of Bayern Munich, as a football, the wages and the levels that they have been playing at for long periods of time. To do what Celtic have done. It’s unbelievable what they have done.
Celtic’s long-term plan in the Champions League
In years gone by, Celtic have entered into the Champions League, and even the competition below, and just not competed.
But this revamped Champions League format has changed everything for those in Glasgow.
Everyone has reacted well to it, including reaching the knockout stages for the first time in over a decade and you are hoping this is now a sign of things to come.
In fact, Celtic have to make sure, at a bare minimum, they are reaching the knockout stages every season with this new format and building up their strength against the best of the best.
