Kyogo Furuhashi was surprised and disappointed when Jorge Sampaoli left his post as Rennes’ manager shortly after he joined the club.

The Japanese frontman completed a surprise switch to Brittany last month, with Portuguese winger Jota going the other way, sealing an emotional return to Parkhead.

Furuhashi has yet to score for his new club in two appearances and recently had to come off injured.

It hasnt been the greatest start to life in France for the forward, who outlined his shock when he discovered that Sampaoli was headed for the exit door: “I spoke with the previous coach before signing the contract,” he said (Lemino Football via RecordSport).

I joined training for one or two days, and when I went in the morning the next day, everyone was talking about how the coach was going to be replaced. I was like ‘what?’ – I was surprised and disappointed.”

Although he was forced off through injury in Rennes’ defeat to Lille last weekend, Furuhashi is back in contention and among the substitutes for his side’s game against Reims this evening.

His mid-season Celtic exit came as somewhat of a surprise, although the likes of Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda have stepped up for Brendan Rodgers’ men in the absence of the 30-year-old.

The Parkhead side travel to face Hibernian at Easter Road tomorrow afternoon.
