Kyogo Furuhashi has admitted his omission from Japan’s World Cup squad during his time at Celtic was a particularly painful moment in his career.
The former Hoops star, who left for Rennes in January, revealed that the snub left him frustrated and even depressed, though he had to quickly refocus as Celtic were preparing for a Champions League fixture at the time.
Speaking to Lemino Football, Kyogo said: “It was really frustrating. To be honest, I think the announcement of the squad was on the day we were traveling for the Champions League away game. I couldn’t let it dwell on me. To be honest, I was really depressed and frustrated, but I had to play in the Champions League, so I did my best to switch gears.”
The Japan squad was announced on November 1st, with Celtic playing Real Madrid the following day.
His move to France was seen as a way to boost his chances of more international opportunities, with the J-League and Bundesliga-based players often favoured over those in Scotland. However, since his departure, Celtic haven’t looked back.
Adam Idah has settled in well, but it’s Daizen Maeda who has truly stepped up in Kyogo’s absence. The Japanese forward has been unstoppable through the middle, racking up 26 goals for the season and contributing plenty of assists. His tireless work rate and end product have made him undroppable, and he’s completed the full 90 minutes in eight of his last nine games.
While Kyogo’s exit was a blow at the time, Celtic have moved on seamlessly, with Maeda now spearheading the attack in style.
