Barry Ferguson has done his job credentials no harm over the past week, but Rangers continue to be linked with a number of high-profile alternatives – Jose Mourinho among them.
Ferguson stepped in following the sacking of Philippe Clement at Ibrox and has guided the Gers past Fenerbahce in the Europa League last 16.
The Rangers favourite also masterminded a famous 3-2 win over Celtic in last weekend’s Old Firm to further lift supporters’ spirits.
Ferguson is therefore a contender to stay on permanently in the Ibrox dugout, but he may have to fend off competition from one of the all-time greats in Mourinho.
Mourinho flirts with Rangers job
Speaking ahead of his Fenerbahce side’s defeat to Rangers, Mourinho implied he would one day be open to managing either Rangers or Celtic.
Indeed, after seeing his side eliminated on penalties at Ibrox, Mourinho further endeared himself to the Rangers faithful with his actions on the pitch.
On the basis of Mourinho‘s comments and actions, former Gers player turned pundit Derek Ferguson – brother of caretaker Barry – believes the Portuguese is a realistic target if the club do opt for a new boss.
Why not? I was watching that interview with my boy, and as soon as he gave an inclination he would be interested, we both looked at each other,” Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News.
But do you know something? I can see the scenario of him being appointed as well. With the takeover and everything that comes with it, what an appointment that would be. That would be absolutely incredible.
“At the same time, I don’t know if he’s just playing mind games as well. He mentioned he loved everything about the Celtic and Rangers game he watched recently. He was excited by that.
“By my god, I’d be excited by that. Because of Europe, which Rangers compete in yearly, that’ll catch the eye. So why not guys of Mourinho’s calibre coming in and helping Rangers catch up with Celtic?
Rangers managerial candidates
Barry Ferguson may well be considered the favourite to stay on as manager next season given recent results.
Beyond Ferguson there is ex-boss Steven Gerrard, plus Russell Martin, Rafael Benitez and Mourinho, among a load of other names.
Each of those come with pros and cons, none more so than Mourinho. If nothing else, though, his appointment would give the news owners a Hollywood name in the dugout.
