Football can change on a dime.

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is finding that out right now. The stopper is chasing Celtic records this season with clean sheets and he has been excellent this year.

The Dane has only missed one match although Schmeichel will sit out this weekend against Hearts with Viljami Sinisalo set to make his Scottish Premiership debut having only played in the Scottish Cup vs Raith Rovers.

Schmeichel picked up an injury on Denmark international duty having saved a penalty vs Portugal but he was accused of chucking in goals in the same game and costing his side in the 5-2 defeat.

Nicklas Bendtner urges Schmeichel to retire from Denmark
Now Arsenal hero Nicklas Bendtner has urged Schmeichel to retire from the international scene as he has Premier League calibre players behind him in the pecking order.

And while the former striker is a big fan of his pal as a man, he reckons it’s time for the 38-year-old to hang up the Danish gloves.

“Kasper is 38 now – I like him a lot, but he cost us a lot of goals in Portugal. He has grown bigge,” Bendtner said via the Scottish Sun.

“I admire the man a great deal, but when he is 38 in such an important position and you have two Premier League keepers behind you, it’s time for the coach Brian Riemer to change it.”

Schmeichel has earned the right to retire on his own time
Schmeichel may not have had the best game against Cristiano Ronaldo and co. but his career warrants more than Bendtner giving his thoughts from a distance

The Celtic hero has earned the right to call time on his career – for club and country – whenever he may choose and certainly doesn’t need advice from a man who is famous for his Paddy Power boxers.

Schmeichel was named captain for that Nations League fixture and he described that as an honour on his 113th cap for his country.

But he might be doubting his loyalties after the PFA had to defend Schmeichel from a hit-piece in the Danish media.
