Peter Grant has urged Celtic not to refrain from splashing a mega transfer fee on a top level striker – but look for a game-changer on a free transfer.
The Hoops failed in their bid to land a new frontman in the January window, despite pushing hard for Brondby’s £14million-rated star Mathias Kvistgaarden.
After selling Kyogo to Rennes for £10million, Brendan Rodgers only has one natural centre forward in Adam Idah at his disposal, although player of the season Daizen Maeda has scored goals for fun when he has been played through the middle.
Irishman Rodgers insists the club will be doing everything they can to improve their squad ahead of next season.
And while admitting Celtic need to build from a position of strength with the wealth of resources available to them, Parkhead hero Grant has suggested an alternative approach in their search for a new striker.
Speaking on GO Radio, he said: “When you are at your strongest, that’s when you have to do your work.
“I have a bit of sympathy with the January window because I think strikers are so difficult to get in a window like that.
“They are doing well enough that Celtic are interested in them, but for the other club you are not going to sell them unless it’s crazy money.
It’s the most difficult position, finding a striker. Celtic have probably been doing it for the last two years and looking (ahead) to the third and the fourth window.
“Who is going to be out of contract? I think it’s better to look for a top-quality striker who is out of contract because it then becomes a little bit easier because you have just got to give them a salary which may be big.
“If you have got to give £6million and then £4million or something in wages, that is going to take it away from you.
You are not going to get a top striker for £6million now, that’s for sure.
“You are going to be paying £15million, at least.”
