It’s that time of year again in Scotland, where the trophies are handed out, Celtic are eating them up, and Rangers are nowhere to be seen.
On Sunday, the final Glasgow derby of the season was played out at Ibrox to a 1-1 draw, with Sky Sports broadcasting the game alongside their usual pundits.
All season long, and for many years now in fact, and since becoming a pundit, Kris Boyd has suffered because Celtic have wiped the floor with everyone, and he has had to talk about it.
Whether it’s Ange Postecoglou winning the Treble before he joined Tottenham, or Brendan Rodgers coming back for the Treble, it’s the same old story again and again.
Along with that Celtic success, and Rangers’ continued failure, comes the custom and regular rant from Boyd.
Kris Boyd rants about Celtic and Rangers’ structure
When Rodgers left Celtic for Leicester in 2019, it didn’t go down well, as Boyd brought it up when blasting Rangers for how they have been running the club.
The former striker is annoyed at ‘the same mistakes’ being made, including the lack of structure in place, because the changes made, since Steven Gerrard left, have been ‘incredible’.
Boyd used Celtic as an example and how, the powers that be, ‘weren’t budging’ on their model when, in Rodgers’ first spell, he wanted to sign more players, yet the opposite happens at Ibrox, as he told Sky Sports Football (04/05/25).
The reality is you are going to be judged on the pitch,” said Boyd. “It’s the same mistakes. Every manager has tried to correct it.
“Since Steven Gerrard left, the change at the football club is incredible. My problem with that is it’s a big problem for Rangers because a new manager has come in, they have given him the keys to the castle to go and sign their type of players.
“All of a sudden, a year or 18 months later, he is out of the door, and these players are still there. That’s going to be the challenge for Rangers going forward as well. Rangers need to put a structure in place.
“You look at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers, potentially, we don’t know for definite, moved on the last time and went to Leicester because he wanted to bring in players. He wanted to strengthen the group. He felt as if he had taken Celtic as far as he could.
“But Celtic weren’t budging from their model. Rangers have allowed, whoever has come in, there you go, go and spend the money. Rangers have spent the money.”
Boyd’s ‘harsh reality’ to Rangers as Celtic dominate
That’s 14 titles out of the last 15 for Celtic, including four in a row as another push for a possible ten is on.
Not only do Celtic have 55 Premiership titles to their name, but they are also Scotland’s most successful club – and counting – after lifting the League Cup last December.
Boyd didn’t hold back in what he thought about Rangers amidst this Celtic dominance.
“The harsh reality is that Rangers have failed domestically again, and Rangers need to get back to winning trophies,” said Boyd. “Or challenging, at least.
“It’s all well, the latter stages (of Europe). We are in Europe after Christmas. Enjoy the banter. But the reality is that you are winning nothing. It has got to change.
