The controversy primarily stems from comments Rohl made regarding the ongoing search for a new centre-forward at the club, though Boyd has also been vocal about the German’s on-pitch celebratory antics.
The initial flashpoint came when Rohl was questioned about the necessity of signing a new striker in the January transfer window, given the inconsistent form of current forwards like Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski. Rohl chose a measured response, stating his belief that he could still get more out of his existing players. “At the moment I have three players, I try to give them opportunities, to give them minutes and also belief,” Rohl said, emphasizing individual and group growth.
This patient approach seemingly didn’t sit well with Boyd. While a direct video response specifically on the striker comments hasn’t dominated the headlines, Boyd has been relentless in his broader critiques of the new manager. In a widely circulated video from a Scottish Sun show, Boyd questioned Rohl’s jubilant celebrations following a 3-0 victory over Dundee, comparing his conduct unfavorably to that of former manager Walter Smith. Boyd, arguing from an “old school” perspective, suggested Rohl and the players should “just get yourself up the tunnel” rather than applauding the fans, asserting that winning games is the ultimate respect.
Rohl, however, appears unfazed by the punditry noise. His focus remains on his immediate responsibilities—improving the current squad and navigating the demanding schedule. While the debate continues to rage among fans about the German’s demeanor versus his results, Rohl’s calm confidence in his current options and managerial philosophy is a clear pushback against his high-profile critics.
