Daniel Farke’s fury at full-time that led to him remonstrating with referee Peter Bankes and ultimately being shown a red card was fuelled by Manchester City’s timewasting, says Leeds United assistant coach Eddie Riemer.
After shaking the hand of Pep Guardiola after the final whistle in the 1-0 defeat, Farke was seen jogging towards the officials in the centre circle and arguing. Bankes quickly pulled out the red card, meaning Farke will be banned from the touchline for Tuesday’s home clash with Sunderland.
As per Football Association rules, he was unable to then partake in post-match media duties and so assistant Riemer spoke to the press. He explained the reasons behind Farke’s anger.
He explained: “I had a short chat with him, so I think we had six minutes added a time. And yeah, obviously if you’re chasing the game, you’re one down, you see the opposition team wasting time…
“I think they got booked also for wasting time. So you feel like, come on, you can, can add a few seconds more.
“I think just about after six minutes, we get to ball for one delivery and then you’re emotional – I think this is what the sport is all about – and you are not allowed to get this last ball in. He’s [Farke] gone on the pitch and said, asked [why]?”
On the severity of Bankes’ punishment, opting for the red card, Reimer added: “Probably the explanation is going to be he was over-emotional, why he’s gone on the pitch, I would suggest.
“But yeah, disappointing that he got sent off… would have wished for a more sensible action of the referee as well. Maybe you can, come on, give a yellow card. It’s an emotional game, and that’s it.”
Riemer is expected to lead the dugout at Elland Road against Sunderland on Tuesday.
Farke was given a touchline ban in February last season having picked up his third yellow card of the season amid the celebrations of the 2-1 Championship comeback against the Black Cats.
