Rangers ‘want’ ex-player to return back to club

Rangers ‘want’ former player Lee McCulloch to join their recruitment setup at the club, according to a new report.

The 47-year-old is currently at Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion, where he works as a Talent Acquisition Manager, contributing to the side’s player recruitment.

Now, journalist Alan Nixon has claimed on his Patreon account that the ex-Scotland international, who spent eight years at Ibrox, is wanted by Rangers for their own recruitment department in a senior role.

During his time at the EPL outfit, he has played a part in the transfer captures of the likes of Joao Pedro, Matt O’Riley, Carlos Baleba, and Yankuba Minteh, among others.

This report comes as the club have appointed Stig Inge Bjørnebye to help with January signings.

The ex-Liverpool player joins as a “football consultant and advisor” on an initial six-month interim basis.

The 56-year-old, who has played over 300 matches for clubs such as Liverpool, Blackburn, and Rosenborg, will start his role at Ibrox this week.

The club says Bjørnebye will target the January transfer window and will not change the football department’s decision-making.

He is seen as a valuable aid in helping the transition after the exit of sporting director Kevin Thelwell last month.

Bjørnebye has sporting director experience from his previous roles at Rosenborg and Denmark’s Aarhus.

He will work closely with the club’s technical director, Dan Purdy, head of recruitment Robbie Thelwell, and head scout, Nathan Fisher.

Sources understand that the recruitment team will provide a plan to be executed for the upcoming window, with head coach Danny Rohl actively involved in the process.

However, final transfer decisions and sign-offs will rest with Cavenagh and Marathe.
