Premier League explain Everton penalty controversy

While Burnley 0-0 Everton won’t be remembered in a hurry, the game did end in controversy with the visitors denied what looked to be a clear penalty.

Tyler Dibling let fly with a shot which hit the arm of Jaidon Anthony.

Toffees players protested on the field and there was a VAR check as replays were looked over.Anthony had his back to the shot, but his arm was outstretched, so there was a definite argument.

But the VAR check was cleared – no penalty – leading to outrage from visiting fans.

And now the Premier League have clarified why the decision was made not to award the Everton spot kick.

Posting on the Premier League Match Centre account on X, a post read: “#BUREVE – 86’

“The referee’s call of no penalty to Everton was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Anthony’s arm was in a justifiable position, with the ball coming from close proximity.”
