Borussia Mönchengladbach Eye Return for Leeds United’s Maximilian Wöber
Last season, Borussia Mönchengladbach benefited from the talents of Leeds United defender Maximilian Wöber, who joined them on loan. As the summer transfer window heats up, Gladbach is eager to secure his services once more.
Towards the end of last season, Gladbach’s sporting director, Roland Virkus, confirmed that discussions had taken place with Leeds regarding the Austrian international. As Gladbach holds their training camp in Tegernsee, Rheinische Post seized the opportunity to speak with Virkus about the potential return of Wöber.
On July 7th, Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that Daniel Farke’s side is demanding a hefty €10-12 million for the centre-back, a figure that exceeds Gladbach’s budget. Virkus echoed this sentiment, stating, “We are, of course, monitoring the market. We cannot meet Leeds United’s demands, and Leeds are not looking for a loan. That’s why the story is on hold for now.”
Wöber himself disclosed that Austria’s national team manager, Ralf Rangnick, had persuaded him to leave Leeds on loan, primarily because they were playing in the Championship last season. With Leeds set to continue in the second division, Wöber might be inclined to seek opportunities elsewhere during this transfer window.
Gladbach is prepared to bide their time, hoping to strike a favorable deal as the window draws to a close. Virkus remains optimistic, stating, “We have always found good solutions – and players like Max Wöber sometimes come back onto the market right at the end. Of course, there are also late decisions.”
As the clock ticks down, Gladbach will be keeping a keen eye on developments, ready to pounce should the opportunity to re-sign Wöber arise.
