Rangers have entered a new era this week, thanks to Danny Rohl being announced as the new head coach at Ibrox, and he would instantly get members of the Gers’ fanbase onside if he ruthlessly removes Joe Rothwell from his plans ahead of making the trip to Brann for a Europa League clash on Thursday.

The Glasgow giants’ season has been nothing short of a disaster, with them sitting 13 points adrift of Scottish Premiership table-toppers Hearts and having to feature in Europe’s second-tier competition due to being humiliated by Club Brugge in the Champions League’s qualification stages.

Martin ultimately paid the price for Rangers’ woeful form as the hierarchy were left with no option but to wield the axe just 17 matches into his reign. Having been tasked with overseeing an upturn in fortunes, Rohl already has some big decisions to make a matter of hours after taking charge.

Rohl Should Drop Rothwell and Look to Sanction Exit

Rohl will become an instant Rangers hero if he axes Rothwell from the starting line-up and turns his attention towards selling the central midfielder when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the year as, alongside Martin, his arrival at Ibrox was a big mistake.

The 30-year-old headed to Glasgow with decent pedigree, having won the Championship title during a loan spell with Leeds United last term, but he has been unable to meet the standards required and has been heavily involved during the Gers’ early season struggles.

Although Rothwell previously played under Martin at Southampton and was rewarded with a £15,000-per-week contract when he agreed to make the move north of the border, he has proven to be a dud rather than an inspired acquisition and it would be in Rangers’ best interests to get him off the wage bill when the next opportunity arises in January.

Rohl showed during his Sheffield Wednesday tenure that he wants his side to be full of energy and winning the ball back quickly. But the former England under-20 international is not known for his pace, with his qualities involving dictating the play, so there are serious concerns that he will struggle to adjust to the fresh demands.

The German tactician will be spending the opening days of his Rangers reign running the rule over the squad he has inherited from predecessor Martin. Rothwell has found it difficult to win over a large section of the supporters since his summer switch and could fall by the wayside.
