Jota was on the Celtic bench for the Motherwell clash as fans had to wait to catch a glimpse of their returning hero since making his big move to the Bhoys from Rennes.
The Portuguese winger looked lively as he almost made an instant impact after he fizzed a left-footed volley past the post and had three shots on goal in Celtic’s win over the Fir Park side.
However, just as Jota was about to make his appearance from the Celtic bench in the 65th minute, something went wrong at BBC Sportsound as the listening Hoops support missed out on hearing the Portuguese winger’s reception as he replaced Nicolas Kuhn.
BBC Sportsound switch to Rangers commentary as Jota made his Celtic debut
The live commentary feed switched to Rangers’ game against Ross County at the exact minute Jota stepped onto the Fir Park turf in a moment that would have left many thousands of Celtic fans raging and disappointed.
Speaking after the incident, match commentator Ian McLeod was forced to apologise live on-air after the embarrassing mix up.
McLeod said on BBC Radio Scotland, “Apologies if you were listening to us here at Fir Park. The gremlins got into the system, and we’re back now.
“So apologies for the interruption in the game. Celtic made a couple of changes there, and they brought on Jota for his debut the second time around.
So, unfortunately, we’ve not been able to give him the big build-up.”
