Striker Kyogo Furuhashi has been told that his persistent shoulder injury that has lingered on from his time at Celtic is a factor in his Stade Rennes nightmare.
The 30-year-old left the Scottish Premiership behind last month for a crack at Ligue 1 as he looked to fire the relegation threatened side to survival – but has quickly been put on the fringes of the squad after boss Jorge Sampaoli was shown the door just days after pushing for a £10million move for the Celtic hero.
Habib Beye stepped into the hot seat and started his first game in charge – the 1-0 win over Strasbourg – but has only managed one substitute appearance since then. He hasn’t made it onto the park in Rennes’ last two matches – and Atsushi Nakayama, who covers French football for DAZN Japan, told the frontman that his problems stem from a knock picked up against Lille.
Beye sent and SOS to Kyogo 10 man Rennes chased a 2-0 deficit – but the striker would limp off just minutes later with a shoulder injury. Nakayama said: “Furuhashi started in the first match against Strasbourg, but failed to make an impact.
“He made an even worse impression in their next match against Lille. He came on in the second half and he suffered a dislocation of his left shoulder in the final minutes.
Speculation is now ramping up that the Japan international could be moved on in the summer – and Nakayama reckons that he will struggle for minutes under the football philosophy of the club and Beye. He added: “Rennes is a team that traditionally gives young players a chance, and when they produce results they sell them to stronger teams for a large transfer fee.
The missions given to new manager Beye are to stay in the first division and to increase the market value of young players. It will be tough for the 30-year-old Furuhashi to get many playing opportunities from now until the end of this season.
Speaking to Japanese media, Kyogo insisted he would win his spot in the team. He said: “First of all, I want to do well here at Rennes and become a player that makes a lot of people want to support me.
“I also want to stay here for a long time and I would like to continue playing until I’m 35. That’s my plan – to play until I am 35. Of course, there’s a chance I might pick up a serious injury in the future, but I hope I can continue playing until then without getting injured.
