The German has been linked with the vacant managers role at Rangers.
Rangers-linked manager Danny Röhl has ‘informed’ EFL Championship club Sheffield Wednesday that he intends to leave the club this summer, as per reports.
The 36-year-old German head coach saw his odds of becoming the new Rangers manager increase this week, with the bookies rating him as a dark-horse contender for the vacant role at Ibrox amid the club’s impending takeover from a US consortium led fronted by Andrew Cavenagh, and backed by 49ers Enterprises.
Rated as one of the best young coaches in Europe, Röhl masterminded an incredible escape from relegation during the 2023/24 season at Hillsborough, securing survival on the final day of the season with a 2-0 win at Sunderland despite being seven points adrift of safety and struggling with no wins in 10 games when he was appointed in October. The Owls finished in 12th place this season.
While ex-Gers boss Steven Gerrard and former Borussia Dortmund head coach Marco Rose are rated as the current favourites for the Rangers job, reports of interest in Röhl gained further traction when he spoke openly about his desire to move on from the club, admitting he “very excited” for the summer ahead in a revealing interview with RB Leipzig-focused blog RBLive, the club where he began his coaching career.
I’ve always said that I’m very grateful to Sheffield for the opportunity I’ve been given there,” said Röhl, who also enjoyed a stint as Bayern Munich’s assistant manager. “I’m someone who always wants to develop the club further, and to do that, you have to weigh up how far that’s still possible or whether the maximum has perhaps already been reached under the current conditions.
“I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches. The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice. After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga. I’m currently very excited to see what happens this summer.
Under contract until the summer of 2027, TalkSPORT have revealed that Röhl has officially decided to leave the club, which has alerted a number of English clubs, including Southampton and Leicester City to his potential availability, alongside rumoured interest from Glasgow.
