Brighton Eye Cup Glory as Hurzeler Promises ‘Something Special’ – Rotation, Resilience, and Redemption Start at Oxford
Brighton’s rapid rise in recent years has taken them to the Europa League, but manager Fabian Hurzeler now sees domestic cup success as the next major milestone. The German coach believes lifting silverware would be a defining achievement for the club and its fans – and the journey begins with an away clash at Oxford United.
Hurzeler insists the tie demands full focus despite Oxford finishing 17th in the Championship last season. He anticipates a bruising battle at the Kassam Stadium, warning against complacency:
“We expect a very organized opponent, solid in their defensive shape and physically strong at the back. It won’t be easy to create chances against them. We need to handle long balls well and win our duels. It’s a challenge, but also a chance to improve on last weekend.”
Brighton’s transformation into a top-flight force has been remarkable, but Hurzeler views a cup triumph as potentially the greatest experience yet:
“This is a competition where you can win a trophy. That’s the expectation – and we want to give our fans what they deserve. Many will travel, spending time and money, so we must deliver our best performance.”
He cited Newcastle United’s League Cup triumph last season as an example of what it means to supporters:
“It might not have the FA Cup’s tradition, but as we saw with Newcastle, winning silverware is special. Fans remember those moments forever.”
Hurzeler plans to rotate his squad without compromising ambition:
“Some players who haven’t featured much will get their opportunity, but I can promise we’re taking it very seriously. There’s real competition in this team.”
The manager confirmed summer signing Maxim de Cuyper could step in for Pervis Estupiñán, while defensive stalwarts Jan Paul van Hecke and Lewis Dunk remain central to his plans. New recruits Oliver Boscagli from PSV and Diego Coppola from Verona also have a chance to impress after impressing in preseason:
“They’ve integrated quickly, shown good character, and now they can prove themselves in a competitive match.”
After the 2-0 defeat to Everton, Hurzeler suggested the club’s transfer business is largely done, though some departures may still occur before the window closes:
“We have a big squad and need to trim it. Hopefully, we’ll have clarity soon.”
