Sunderland have wasted no time responding to the sudden loss of Marc Guiu, who has been recalled by Chelsea, by striking an ambitious deal to bring Ajax forward Brian Brobbey to the Premier League in a transfer worth up to €35 million.
The Black Cats had secured Guiu on loan for their top-flight return, but Chelsea’s urgent need for reinforcements – triggered by Nicolas Jackson’s impending Bayern Munich move and an injury crisis – saw them activate an unexpected solution, even though the initial loan agreement included no recall clause.
Left short up front, Sunderland moved quickly and decisively, agreeing a deal for Brobbey reported as “done” by Fabrizio Romano. The package includes €20 million guaranteed plus €5 million in performance-related add-ons, with the player scheduled for a medical on Monday.
Brobbey’s name has history attached – he was once courted heavily by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, who personally pitched him a move, promising a huge salary and millions for his agent. Despite that, the Dutch striker insisted on returning to Ajax at the time, a decision that even saw his agent waive a major sell-on percentage. Some journalists later revealed Ten Hag was willing to pay as much as £34 million for Brobbey, despite Ajax only paying £8.5 million to bring him back from Leipzig.
Sunderland’s transfer business doesn’t stop there. The club is closing in on a second significant addition, agreeing terms with RB Leipzig for Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida. Signed for €20 million just last summer, Geertruida has slipped down Leipzig’s hierarchy, opening the door for a loan move to Wearside that includes an option to buy.
This bold double swoop signals Sunderland’s intent to not just survive, but compete strongly in their Premier League comeback season.
