The Wearsiders sealed an audacious £21.6 million deal for Ajax striker Brian Brobbey, a Netherlands international with an impressive record of 56 goals and 24 assists in 163 appearances. At just 23, Brobbey is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards.
This signing marks Sunderland’s 13th addition of a stunning summer, taking their total spending to a jaw-dropping £167.1 million, as billionaire owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus bankrolls one of the boldest recruitment drives by any newly-promoted Premier League club.
Manager Régis Le Bris sees Brobbey as a crucial addition after losing Marc Guiu back to Chelsea and plans to spearhead the attack alongside Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda.
Meanwhile, the hunt for a winger continues before the 7pm deadline, with outgoings also in motion – Patrick Roberts is close to Birmingham City on loan, while Ahmed Abdullahi’s move to Angers has collapsed.
