Paul Konchesky has questioned whether Nuno Espirito Santo would be the right fit to take over at West Ham United if Graham Potter is dismissed. Speaking with Give Me Sport, the former Hammers defender argued that the Portuguese coach’s tactical style may not align with what supporters at the London Stadium want to see.
Potter’s tenure in East London has come under mounting scrutiny after a miserable start to the 2025/26 campaign. With just three points from their opening five matches and a spot in the relegation zone, the 50-year-old’s position is hanging by a thread. That uncertainty has led to West Ham exploring alternatives, with Nuno Espirito Santo identified as a leading candidate.
Konchesky, however, believes Nuno’s system bears too close a resemblance to David Moyes’ pragmatic approach, which had worn thin with fans:
“Initially, people might say it’s a good appointment. But Nuno’s style mirrors Moyes — defending deep, breaking with pace, and relying heavily on wide players. West Ham fans grew tired of that and crave more expansive football. It’ll be interesting to see how supporters respond, but for now, Potter’s fate is the key factor.”
Nuno’s managerial record remains strong overall. In more than eight years in the Premier League, he has built a reputation for efficiency and resilience. He led Wolves and Nottingham Forest to surprise European qualification, cementing his status as a capable tactician. Yet, his short-lived spell at Tottenham raised doubts, with the club cutting ties just weeks into his reign.
Since then, Nuno revived his reputation at Nottingham Forest, although his exit from the City Ground followed clashes with owner Evangelos Marinakis and sporting director Edu. Despite that turbulent ending, the 51-year-old is once again attracting interest, including from West Ham’s hierarchy.
As things stand, Potter’s future remains precarious. If results do not improve swiftly, West Ham could push ahead with talks to install Nuno as his successor. Still, Konchesky’s warning raises the question of whether his pragmatic football would truly satisfy the London Stadium faithful.
