Gjanni Alioski Makes Heartfelt Return to Europe as Lugano Re-Sign Leeds United Fan Favourite
Ezgjan Alioski is heading back to Europe following the conclusion of his stint in the Middle East, rejoining Swiss club FC Lugano in what marks an emotional return for the former Leeds United fan favourite.
Alioski, a beloved figure among Leeds supporters, first arrived at Elland Road in 2017 from Lugano and quickly earned cult hero status during his four-year spell at the club. It was under Marcelo Bielsa’s management that the versatile North Macedonian truly flourished, becoming a crucial part of the Argentine’s dynamic squad. Alioski featured in Bielsa’s very first starting eleven for Leeds and continued to be a consistent presence, playing in multiple roles across midfield and defence.
His relentless energy and unorthodox style made him a standout performer — something even teammate Patrick Bamford acknowledged when he admitted he’d hate to play against him. Alioski racked up 170 appearances for Leeds, contributing 22 goals and 19 assists while operating as a winger, full-back, and wing-back.
After leaving Leeds, Alioski signed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli. However, with the club bringing in several high-profile foreign players, he was eventually loaned to Turkish giants Fenerbahce due to squad registration limits. Despite the detour, Alioski remained eager to return to Europe, specifically to Switzerland, where his professional journey began.
Now 33, Alioski has secured a move back to Lugano after his contract with Al-Ahli expired. The switch marks a sentimental homecoming for the versatile wide man, who previously tallied an impressive 36 goal contributions in 54 appearances during his first spell with the Swiss side.
Reflecting on his career, Alioski has often cited Bielsa’s influence as transformative. In a 2019 interview, he praised the Argentine’s winning mentality and high standards, noting that every defeat under Bielsa brought intense scrutiny and hard work: “He hates losing… it’s good to have a coach like that,” he said.
While his most iconic years came in the white of Leeds, Alioski’s return to Lugano closes the circle on a career that has blended flair, effort, and emotional loyalty in equal measure.
