Brighton are reportedly preparing a sensational £40 million bid for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott, with the South Coast side eyeing a major summer coup in the wake of Florian Wirtz’s record-breaking arrival at Anfield.
Elliott, 22, could be on the move after falling further down the pecking order following Liverpool’s £112.4 million capture of German sensation Wirtz. Despite his affection for the club, Elliott has admitted he is at a crossroads in his career and is weighing his options ahead of the new season.
The England U21 star—who has impressed at the European Championships with goals against Spain and the Czech Republic—was limited to 28 appearances last season, having missed the start of the campaign with a broken foot. With first-team chances likely to dwindle further, Brighton are hoping to tempt the highly-rated midfielder with the promise of more regular football and a key role under Roberto De Zerbi.
Reports claim Brighton consider Elliott a “priority target,” and hope that the presence of veteran James Milner—Elliott’s former teammate at Liverpool—could play a role in convincing him to make the move south. Liverpool signed Elliott from Fulham back in 2019, and the London club are now in line for a potential £8 million windfall due to a 20% sell-on clause inserted in that deal.
Although Elliott has not publicly pushed for a move, his recent comments suggest he’s open to a transfer if it means advancing his career. “I don’t really want to be wasting years,” he said. “I need to reflect. I need to see if I’m content in doing what I’m doing and how I can improve as a player.”
No deal is expected to be finalised until after the conclusion of the U21 Euros on June 28, but Elliott could be just one of several big names heading for the Liverpool exit. Federico Chiesa and Darwin Núñez have both been linked with moves away, with Jurgen Klopp’s successor overseeing what could be a major summer overhaul.
Liverpool’s recruitment team—renowned for their methodical and data-driven approach—will be keen to ensure exits are offset with high-quality arrivals. But as history has shown, big-money signings don’t always deliver immediate success. The likes of Phil Babb once carried similar weighty expectations and struggled to live up to the price tag.
