He Snubs Giants? Star Defender Fancies Black Cats Over La Liga Titans – Sunderland Join Atletico Madrid in Shock Tug-of-War for Angeliño!

Sunderland and Atlético Madrid Enter Race for Angeliño as Roma Prepare for Summer Shake-Up

Angeliño’s future at Roma is once again in question, as interest grows across Europe following a potential move to Al-Hilal falling through. While the Saudi giants had once lined up the Spanish full-back as a Plan B to Milan’s Theo Hernandez — even preparing to spend upwards of €20 million — their attention has now seemingly shifted, leaving Roma scrambling for alternatives.

At 27, Angeliño is no stranger to relocation. His professional journey has seen him pass through nine clubs in just over a decade, including stints at Manchester City, PSV Eindhoven, RB Leipzig, and even New York City FC. After joining Roma on loan from Leipzig in January 2024, the left-back initially appeared to be a short-term solution. However, under Claudio Ranieri, he cemented himself as a first-choice starter, featuring in 36 Serie A matches last season.

But football rarely stands still. With Gian Piero Gasperini now in charge of the Giallorossi, Angeliño’s position is no longer secure. Not only might his playing style not suit Gasperini’s preferred system, but he’s also one of the few high-value players Roma could realistically offload to help meet Financial Fair Play requirements.

With Al-Hilal’s interest cooling and Roma under pressure to raise funds without sacrificing core talents like Evan Ndicka, the club is hoping a new buyer emerges quickly. Fortunately, that may already be happening.

According to *Gianluca Di Marzio*, La Liga powerhouse Atlético Madrid are weighing up a move for Angeliño, seeing him as a versatile and experienced reinforcement. Meanwhile, *Sportitalia* reports that Premier League newcomers Sunderland have also joined the chase, with the Black Cats hoping to pull off an ambitious swoop to strengthen their backline ahead of their top-flight return.

While Atlético Madrid offers Champions League pedigree, Sunderland could provide the promise of a key role in a growing project — and perhaps, the chance to be part of another Premier League underdog success story.

Either way, Roma are eager to cash in — and Angeliño’s next adventure looks to be just around the corner.
