Sunderland Eye Move for £17m Winger as Agent Claims Star is “Ready for Big Stages” Amid Sassuolo Talks
Sunderland are reportedly pursuing a deal for Sassuolo winger Armand Laurienté, with discussions already underway between the Premier League newcomers and the Italian club, according to ESPN. The 26-year-old Frenchman has emerged as a summer target following a stellar season that saw him play a key role in Sassuolo’s promotion to Serie A, tallying 18 goals and 6 assists in 33 league matches.
Despite Sassuolo’s own return to Italy’s top flight, they are said to be open to selling Laurienté, with a valuation in the range of £15-£20 million being discussed. The Black Cats have “made contact” regarding a potential deal, and Laurienté’s agent, Roberto Meloni, has added fuel to the speculation by asserting that his client is prepared for a move to a top-level club.
Speaking in February, Meloni acknowledged past links to Serie A champions Napoli and stated that while a January transfer didn’t materialize, interest from big clubs remains alive. He emphasized Laurienté’s elite-level potential, stating: “He is not a second division player: he is ready for the big stages.”
Meloni also mentioned that significant bids had been turned down last summer, suggesting a future transfer fee could reach around £17 million. Laurienté, who joined Sassuolo in 2022 from FC Lorient — where Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris previously worked — has scored 31 goals and provided 18 assists across 102 appearances for the Italian side. Versatile in attack, he mainly features as a left winger but can also operate across the frontline.
