Brighton Offload Valentin Barco in £10m Strasbourg Deal as Former Seagull Boss Strikes Again

Brighton & Hove Albion have agreed to sell Argentine youngster Valentin Barco to Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg in a transfer worth approximately £10 million, per reports from French outlet *L’Équipe*.

Barco, 20, initially joined Brighton from Boca Juniors for a similar fee in 2023, signing a long-term contract until 2028. Though he made seven appearances under then-manager Roberto De Zerbi, Barco struggled to secure a consistent role and was loaned out last season.

His first loan stint with Sevilla didn’t go to plan, but a January switch to Strasbourg turned his fortunes around. Under the guidance of former Brighton player and coach Liam Rosenior, Barco made 15 appearances, delivered two assists, and played a key role in Strasbourg’s seventh-place finish—enough to secure UEFA Conference League play-off qualification.

While primarily known as a left-sided player, Barco found a new rhythm in central roles at Strasbourg, thriving under Rosenior’s system. That strong finish convinced the French club to trigger the purchase clause included in his loan agreement.

Barco also earned his first senior cap for Argentina in March 2024, featuring against El Salvador, further highlighting his growing profile.

From Brighton’s perspective, the deal makes pragmatic sense. Despite showing technical promise, Barco perhaps lacked the physical edge needed to break into the Premier League as a regular starter. With limited depth at left-back and uncertainty surrounding Pervis Estupiñán—who is attracting interest from Manchester United—the Seagulls may now be forced to bolster that position in the transfer window.

Although makeshift options like Ferdi Kadioglu and Jack Hinshelwood can fill the gap temporarily, new head coach Fabian Hürzeler is likely to demand a more permanent solution to secure that flank ahead of the new season.
