Rangers Eye South African Star Relebohile Mofokeng as Leeds United Hero Radebe Gives Green Light for Europe Switch
Rangers are reportedly targeting South African sensation Relebohile Mofokeng as their summer transfer activity continues to gather pace. The 20-year-old Orlando Pirates star, who was recently crowned the South African Premier Division’s Player of the Season for 2024/25, is now being tipped for a major step up to European football.
Mofokeng has already earned six international caps for South Africa and played a key role for Pirates over the past two campaigns. His consistent performances have drawn attention from across Europe, with Rangers among the clubs now closely linked with a move for the dynamic midfielder.
Adding weight to those links, former Leeds United defender and South African football icon Lucas Radebe has backed Mofokeng to make the jump across continents. Speaking to iDiski Times, Radebe insisted the young midfielder is more than ready for a European challenge:
> “I think he’s ready. You don’t need five or ten seasons in the PSL to be prepared. He’s had two brilliant years – that’s enough to show his potential. Now, Europe can really shape his development.”
Radebe also warned that staying too long in South Africa could hinder Mofokeng’s growth, referencing other top South African talents who he felt should’ve moved abroad earlier. He firmly believes Mofokeng is at the ideal stage of his career to make the leap.
At Ibrox, new head coach Russell Martin has wasted no time stamping his authority on the squad. He’s already secured Bournemouth full-back Max Aarons on loan and completed the signing of Dundee playmaker Lyall Cameron on a pre-contract.
However, the club has also undergone a summer shake-up with the departure of several players. High-profile names such as Ianis Hagi, Leon Balogun, and Tom Lawrence have exited, alongside promising academy products including Adam Devine and Cole McKinnon. Additionally, loan players like Vaclav Cerny, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, and Rafael Fernandes have returned to their parent clubs.
With over two months remaining in the window, more business is expected from Rangers. The pursuit of Mofokeng could mark another exciting step in the club’s summer rebuild.
