Rangers Eye Free-Kick Maestro John Swift as Russell Martin’s Summer Rebuild Gains Momentum


Glasgow Rangers are plotting a move for 30-year-old free agent and set-piece specialist John Swift, as new manager Russell Martin continues reshaping the squad ahead of their Champions League qualifying clash with Panathinaikos.

It’s been a hectic spell for the Ibrox club, now under the stewardship of 49ers Enterprises, with four new players already arriving through the door.

Midfielder Joe Rothwell, a familiar face to Martin from their time at Southampton, joined from Bournemouth, while towering defender Emmanuel Fernandez followed from Peterborough.

The new boss described Fernandez as a player with “huge potential” and believes the young centre-back can thrive in Rangers’ environment.

They join Lyall Cameron and Max Aarons as part of a growing group of fresh recruits, with Leicester’s Conor Coady and Luton’s Thelo Aasgaard also tipped for moves to Glasgow in the coming days.

Amidst the ongoing transfer activity, Rangers have now turned their attention to Swift, who became available after parting ways with West Bromwich Albion at the end of June.

The English midfielder, known for his technical skill and dead-ball prowess, is attracting attention from several Championship clubs  including Derby County, Norwich City, Portsmouth, and Stoke City but Rangers are hopeful of tempting him north for the first cross-border move of his career.

Swift, a Chelsea academy product, has spent the majority of his playing days with Reading and West Brom.

He has received glowing praise from former managers, including Tony Mowbray, who hailed his ability to curl free-kicks into the top corner and called him “a wonderful player.” Similarly, ex-Reading boss Veljko Paunovic once labeled Swift “super talented,” noting his creativity and game-changing impact when fit.

Rangers are eager to add his experience and flair to their midfield as Martin continues to mold a competitive side capable of challenging on both domestic and European fronts.
