Rothwell Reveals How Rangers’ New Owners and Manager Martin Inspired Ibrox Switch

Joe Rothwell has opened up on the key reasons behind his decision to join Rangers, revealing that conversations with the club’s new ownership and head coach Russell Martin played a crucial role in persuading him to make the move from Bournemouth to Glasgow.

The midfielder, who officially signed for the Gers earlier this week, discussed the factors that influenced his transfer during a press appearance on Friday.

He highlighted the impact of the recent changes behind the scenes at Ibrox, including the 51% takeover by a consortium fronted by Andrew Cavenagh and backed by 49ers Enterprises. The group quickly injected £20 million into the club and appointed Martin Rothwell’s former manager at Southampton as head coach.

“It’s an exciting time with the new owners,” Rothwell said. “They outlined a clear vision for where they want the club to go and the ambitions they have. That really appealed to me, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

The 29-year-old also spoke glowingly about Martin’s style and personality, both of which helped seal the deal. “He sees the game exactly how I would want to if I were a manager. That was a big draw,” Rothwell explained. “But more importantly, it’s the kind of person he is that makes you want to work with him not just the tactical stuff.”

Describing Martin’s approach as “possession-based,” Rothwell acknowledged that outsiders might misread it. “From the outside, it might look like we’re just passing for the sake of it.

But once you’re inside that system, you realize every pass has a purpose. As long as the players understand and buy into it, I think we’ll really enjoy the way we play.”

Rothwell’s signing marks another step in what appears to be a bold new era for Rangers, with the club’s fresh leadership looking to transform their competitive prospects both on and off the pitch.
