Although manager Russell Martin currently has Danilo, Cyriel Dessers, and Hamza Igamane at his disposal, uncertainty looms over the futures of the latter two.
Dessers has attracted concrete interest, with the club recently turning down a bid deemed far below their valuation. Jamie Vardy Emerges as a Short-Term Solution
Veteran striker Jamie Vardy has been linked with a move to Ibrox, with Rangers reportedly leading the race after Genoa pulled out. The 38-year-old ended his legendary spell at Leicester City this summer, having tallied 200 goals in 500 appearances and helped the club to a historic Premier League title and FA Cup triumph.
Despite his age, Vardy continues to demonstrate his goal-scoring prowess. He scored nine times in 35 Premier League games last season, following a 20-goal campaign in the Championship the year prior. Notably, he was the only player over 34 to rank among the top scorers aged 30+ in the English top flight last season evidence that he remains a potent threat.
Luuk De Jong Also Weighing Up Ibrox Move
Rangers may also have the opportunity to sign another proven forward. Dutch international Luuk De Jong is considering a move to Scotland after leaving PSV Eindhoven at the end of his contract, according to journalist Sebastien Vidal.
The 34-year-old free agent is assessing his options, with Rangers confirmed as one of the interested clubs. PSV boss Peter Bosz acknowledged discussing the prospect with De Jong, leaving the door open for a potential switch to Ibrox.
Why De Jong Might Be a Smarter Signing than Vardy
Should Rangers have to choose between the two, De Jong may offer more than Vardy on both short- and medium-term fronts. Four years younger, the Dutch striker may still have several strong seasons ahead, and his recent record backs that up.
In the 2024/25 season, De Jong delivered 18 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances for PSV. This followed a remarkable 2023/24 campaign in which he racked up 38 goals and 18 assists in 48 matches. Over the past two seasons, he has produced a combined 56 goals and 30 assists far surpassing Vardy’s total of 30 goals and six assists over the same period at Leicester.
These figures underline De Jong’s dual threat as both a scorer and creator. His ability to provide consistent output in front of goal and set up chances for teammates makes him a potentially better-rounded option for Rangers.
Although neither striker would represent a long-term solution, De Jong’s younger age, impressive recent form, and overall contribution suggest he could have a more significant and sustained impact as Rangers aim to reclaim the Scottish Premiership crown.
