NafisaSunderland’s high-impact transfer dealings have sparked optimism from seasoned football adviser Keith Wyness, who now believes the Black Cats are well-positioned to avoid an instant return to the Championship.
As one of the newly promoted teams, Sunderland will attempt to break the trend that’s seen promoted clubs like Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United tumble straight back down in recent years.
Despite having few Premier League-experienced signings, Wyness who previously served as Everton CEO and currently advises top-tier clubs sees reasons to be upbeat.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness praised Sunderland’s transfer window strategy, describing their early business as “fantastic.”
He noted that the squad is now being built with a balance of youth and experienced players, singling out the signing of Simon Adingra as a key move.
“Stacking the team with young talent is exciting,” he said, “but surviving the Premier League pressure cooker takes more.
Sunderland are adding the right experience now, and I’m a big fan of their window. They’ve done the work early and smartly – it’s given them a real shot.”
He added that the timing of the signings gives the manager the advantage of a full pre-season to integrate the new faces – something he sees as “magical” for squad cohesion.
Wyness believes Sunderland are primed to defy the odds and become one of the rare newly promoted sides to retain top-flight status.
He hailed the club’s progress both on and off the pitch, praising their young chairman and highlighting the potential return of the famous Northeast derby as a major boost for English football.
“In my view, Sunderland are in a very strong place heading into the season. They’re a massive club with great support, and I’ll be watching with real interest,” he concluded.
