Brighton winger Jeremy Sarmiento has become one of this summer’s most talked-about transfer figures, with his name surfacing in a steady stream of reports linking him to clubs across Europe and South America. The latest twist involves a collapsed move to Brazilian club Cruzeiro despite a full agreement having been reached on all fronts.
According to respected Brazilian outlet Itatiaia, Cruzeiro had lined up a deal to sign the 23-year-old Ecuador international permanently, identifying him as a prime target for their rebuild. The club was searching for a young, dynamic wide player with international pedigree and future resale value criteria that Sarmiento, born in Spain and capped by Ecuador, checked completely.
After a strong season on loan at Burnley where he made 37 appearances, scored four goals, and helped the club secure promotion to the Premier League Sarmiento’s stock rose sharply. Brighton had loaned him out for game time and development, but his impressive form turned him into a hot commodity.
Cruzeiro wasted no time moving for the winger, reportedly reaching a swift agreement with Brighton on a permanent fee. Personal terms with the player were also ironed out, with insiders describing the deal as “virtually done.”
However, in a late twist, journalists Samuel Venâncio and Leonardo Gimenez revealed that Sarmiento had a change of heart. Despite the deal being wrapped up behind the scenes, he informed Cruzeiro that he wasn’t ready to return to South America. Instead, he intends to continue his career in Europe, causing the transfer to collapse at the final hurdle.
