Farke Already Has Solomon Successor as Gnonto Shines Bright in Pre-Season Showcase
Leeds United are pressing ahead with plans to bolster their wing options this summer, aiming to reinforce a position recently vacated by Manor Solomon. The Israeli attacker departed Elland Road having left an indelible mark, especially with his title-clinching goal that etched him into club folklore. With Solomon now back at Tottenham after his loan, attention has swiftly shifted to bringing in Brazilian winger Igor Paixao, a deal that now seems highly likely to materialize.
While Paixao’s potential arrival offers an exciting boost on the left flank, manager Daniel Farke may not need to look far to find another top-tier option already at his disposal. Willy Gnonto reminded everyone of his explosive quality in Leeds’ pre-season clash against Paderborn, netting a spectacular goal from the left wing a position where he arguably performs at his best.
Despite spending much of last season on the right side, the 21-year-old initially broke into the Leeds lineup from the left during the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, registering two goals and four assists in 14 starts. His ability to cut inside onto his stronger right foot and fire low towards goal is a trademark move, exemplified by his famous strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Though Gnonto has adapted well to playing on the right, his pre-season display once again showcased why his natural strengths are maximized on the left. His quick turns, sharp movement, and precise shooting give him the edge when deployed on that flank, where he can manipulate space and dictate the final ball.
It’s no secret that the emergence of Solomon and Crysencio Summerville in recent seasons has limited Gnonto’s minutes on the left, but that shouldn’t remain the case going forward. While the potential signing of Paixao might make him the presumed starter, Farke must strike a balance, ensuring Gnonto who has long been one of Leeds’ most technically gifted players gets ample opportunities in his preferred position.
Largie Ramazani also remains an exciting prospect in the mix, adding further depth and competition for places out wide. But with Gnonto now maturing into a more complete player, his readiness to step into Solomon’s shoes is clear. Farke’s challenge lies in rotation and squad management, ensuring Leeds can maintain their Premier League status while getting the best from all his attacking assets.
