Brighton Hit by Injury Woes as Diego Gomez Joins Growing List of Absentees â Adam Webster Set for Lengthy Spell Out
Brightonâs pre-season preparations have been dealt another blow, with Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez the latest name added to their growing list of fitness concerns. The 20-year-old made a brief appearance during Brightonâs 2-0 victory over Coventry City last Saturday but was forced off just 17 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute for Kaoru Mitoma.
Gomez was replaced by Andrew Moran in the 63rd minute, prompting concern among supporters. However, the club later clarified that the midfielder had left the pitch due to illness and is expected to resume training as early as Monday.
Brighton boss Fabian HĂźrzeler attempted to downplay broader injury concerns, stating that several key players such as Danny Welbeck, Olivier Boscagli, and Carlos Baleba are dealing with only minor issues and should return to full training shortly. âWith the exception of Adam \[Webster] and Solly March, whoâs still a few weeks away, we expect the squad to be close to full strength soon,â HĂźrzeler added.
Despite the injury cloud, Brighton managed a solid pre-season outing. Yasin Ayari opened the scoring after some sharp play by Matt OâRiley, while substitute Moran played a pivotal role in the second goal, providing the assist for Abdullah Simaâs clinical finish.
However, the more serious setback revolves around centre-back Adam Webster. HĂźrzeler confirmed that the experienced defender sustained a significant knee ligament injury during their recent training camp in Spain and is now facing a lengthy recovery. Surgery is planned in the coming weeks, and while a timeline hasnât been confirmed, Webster is expected to miss a major portion of the 2025â26 campaign.
âIt was a case of very unfortunate luck,â said HĂźrzeler. âAdam came back in excellent shape, ready to go, and now heâs sidelined for what could be months. His absence will be deeply feltânot just for his defensive ability but also his leadership on and off the pitch. Weâll ensure he gets the best care during his rehab.â
With only two more friendliesâagainst Southampton on August 2 and Wolfsburg on August 9âbefore their Premier League opener against Fulham on August 16, Brighton are hoping to avoid further injury setbacks as they fine-tune their squad for the upcoming season.
