Sunderland Pull Plug on Record-Breaking Transfer as Hibs Admit Defeat โ€“ Euro, Championship & MLS Clubs Circle Rising Star

Sunderland have officially ended negotiations with Hibernian over the permanent transfer of Nectar Triantis, despite the Scottish Premiership club being ready to break their transfer record to bring the Australian defender back to Easter Road. According to the *Daily Record*, the โ€œdeal is off,โ€ with Hibs reluctantly conceding defeat after being informed by the Black Cats that Triantis wonโ€™t be returning to Edinburgh.

Triantis impressed during his loan spell at Hibs last season, emerging as one of their top performers and prompting the club to pursue a full-time move. However, Sunderlandโ€”currently shaping their squad for a return to the Premier Leagueโ€”have opted to keep their options open. While a sale isnโ€™t off the table entirely, any exit from the Stadium of Light is now more likely to involve interest from the English Championship, Major League Soccer, or top-tier European leagues.

Still only 22, the centre-back is seen as a player with significant upside, despite missing recent pre-season fixtures against Hearts and Hull City due to a minor knock. Sunderland are expected to make a final call on his future once head coach Rรฉgis Le Bris completes his defensive reshuffle ahead of the new campaign.

In the meantime, Triantis is also weighing a major international decision, with both Australia and Greece eager to secure his senior international allegiance. Though heโ€™s featured for Australia at youth level, the Sydney-born defender remains uncapped at the senior level, leaving the door open to both nations.

The failed move to Hibs underscores Sunderlandโ€™s more ambitious transfer posture this summer, with deals for Bayer Leverkusen duo Granit Xhaka and Amine Adli currently in the works. Xhakaโ€™s ยฃ13 million switch is reportedly nearing completion, while Sunderland are prepared to rival Wolves for Adliโ€”valued at ยฃ23 millionโ€”as they look to reinforce their frontline following Romaine Mundleโ€™s injury setback and a collapsed deal for Armand Laurientรฉ.

While Hibernian may have lost out on a key target, Triantisโ€™ stock continues to riseโ€”and his next step could be far bigger than anyone anticipated.
