Rangers have reportedly made it clear that Jose Cifuentes is up for sale this summer, as the club moves away from loan options and seeks a permanent transfer for the Ecuadorian midfielder.
Following a mixed loan spell at Aris Thessaloniki in Greece—and a previous stint in Brazil with Cruzeiro—Cifuentes has returned to Ibrox, but doesn’t appear to be part of Russell Martin’s long-term plans.
Despite fresh interest from Brazilian outfit Sport Recife, the Light Blues are unwilling to sanction another temporary switch, according to Rangers Review. Instead, they’re looking to offload the 26-year-old on a permanent basis.
The former LAFC star, who still has two years remaining on his contract after joining under Michael Beale, has drawn attention from clubs across Europe and the Americas.
But with competition in midfield intensifying—thanks to new signings Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard, plus the presence of Nico Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, Lyall Cameron, Kieran Dowell, Connor Barron, and Bailey Rice—it’s increasingly unlikely Cifuentes will find game time under the new regime.
The decision marks a turning point in the club’s handling of the player, who was once touted as a transformative signing but has struggled to establish himself in Glasgow.
