Sunderland were among the busiest clubs in the recent transfer window, reshaping their squad with 15 new additions while simultaneously waving goodbye to several familiar faces.
Yet, while some of the club’s most important talents were tied down to fresh, long-term deals, a number of players still find themselves staring at uncertain futures.
As things stand, these are the Black Cats who could be set to depart Wearside when their contracts expire next summer:
Blondy Nna Noukeu
The 23-year-old keeper has yet to make a first-team appearance and could leave without ever playing a competitive game. Sunderland do have a one-year extension option, but it wouldn’t be shocking if they chose against using it.
Simon Moore
A respected figure in the dressing room and a dependable backup, but at 36 when his deal expires, Sunderland may decide against renewing his contract.
Joe Anderson
Long linked with an exit, Anderson has yet to find a way out. If he stays past January, the summer looks like his final chapter at the Stadium of Light.
Zak Johnson
A promising academy graduate whose path to the first team has been blocked by Sunderland’s promotion. His future may lie elsewhere if opportunities don’t materialise.
Dennis Cirkin
Perhaps the most significant name on the list. Fans are desperate to see him commit long-term, but competition from Masuaku and Mandava could complicate matters. Should Cirkin seek a fresh challenge, Sunderland could face an unwanted showdown.
Lutsharel Geertruida
Currently on loan with an option-to-buy. Much depends on Sunderland’s Premier League survival and his performances this season. If things go to plan, Sunderland will likely make his stay permanent.
Dan Neil
Another promotion hero who still has plenty to offer, but increased competition may test his patience. Sunderland want him to extend, but until he signs, nothing is guaranteed.
Jay Matete
Widely tipped to leave in the summer, his chances of staying appear slim. A January exit remains possible, and he’d be a smart signing for ambitious lower-league clubs.
Harrison Jones
Highly rated but still raw, a loan looks like the logical next step. His contract is due to expire, though Sunderland could extend it by a year, which feels probable.
Bertrand Traoré
Signed on a one-year deal at the end of the window. The club hold the option to extend, meaning his performances will ultimately decide whether he stays beyond next summer.
