Rangers could soon regret splashing £10million on Youssef Chermiti after his high-profile move from Everton. The 21-year-old became the club’s second-biggest signing ever, a gamble that has put immense pressure on both the striker and the recruitment team. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell, who previously brought Chermiti to the Premier League, has staked his reputation on a forward who has yet to deliver at the top level.
The Gers, however, may have overlooked smarter business. Bojan Miovski, already proven in Scottish football, has arrived at Ibrox and looks a much more reliable option to lead the line. Meanwhile, Vaclav Cerny and Abdallah Sima — two attackers who could have been secured for far less — slipped away.
Cerny, a fan favourite during his loan stint at Ibrox, joined Besiktas for just £6m. Sima, who scored 11 league goals during his spell in Glasgow, sealed a permanent deal with Lens for only £4m. Together, the pair cost less than half of what Rangers paid for Chermiti, leaving supporters to question the club’s priorities.
Chermiti’s record doesn’t inspire much confidence either. Signed by Everton from Sporting CP for £11.5m in 2023, he failed to score in the Premier League and made only four appearances last season. Now at Rangers, he faces a demanding fanbase, fierce competition for the No.9 role, and doubts about whether manager Russell Martin will even start him.
For a club under constant scrutiny, the risk is clear: Chermiti has arrived with a heavy price tag, minimal experience, and sky-high expectations. If he fails to deliver quickly, Rangers’ £10m bet could go down as one of their biggest transfer blunders in decades.
