Rangers recently appointed Danny Rohl as their new manager, and he could look to implement a position change with James Tavernier, similar to what he did with Yan Valery during his time at Sheffield Wednesday.
After a long process of appointing a new manager, Rangers finally landed on Rohl, over two weeks after sacking their previous coach. A host of different managers appeared to be in the frame over the last couple of weeks, but it’s Rohl who will enter the hot seat, aiming to change the fortunes of the Ibrox outfit.
Rohl has been out of work since leaving Sheffield Wednesday, and despite Kevin Muscat and Steven Gerrard seemingly close to being appointed previously, it’s the 36-year-old who has put pen-to-paper. With the Gers sitting in sixth position in the Scottish Premiership table, already 13 points adrift of Hearts in first, Rohl has a huge task on his hands to turn things around.
Rohl Could Implement Position Change for Tavernier
At times during his spell with Sheffield Wednesday, Rohl used Valery, who is traditionally a right-back, as a makeshift right-midfielder. This is something we could see him implement with Tavernier to try and get the best out of him, with the English right-back enduring a difficult start to the campaign.
Tavernier is traditionally known for his creativity and goalscoring threat, despite being a defender, providing a whopping 278 goals and assists combined during his time at Rangers, averaging a goal or assist every other game. Max Aarons arrived at the club to provide competition at right-back, but if Rohl implements a similar alteration as he did with Valery, we could see both players thrive in the same side.
Having Tavernier, who earns £30,000-a-week at Ibrox, further up the pitch to provide a creative threat on the right-hand side could be hugely beneficial for Rangers, and it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see Rohl make that decision in the near future. Rohl might have to make some drastic changes in order to turn things around at Ibrox, and getting the best out of both Tavernier and Aarons could be high on his agenda in the opening weeks of his tenure.
Rohl’s first game in charge of the Gers will be against Brann in the Europa League on Thursday, before they host Kilmarnock in his first Scottish Premiership game at the helm this weekend.
