Rangers boss Rohl defends decision to start Chermiti

angers manager Danny Rohl has defended his decision to start Youssef Chermiti in the match against Brann.

Chermiti, a £10 million summer signing from Everton, has struggled to make an impact at Rangers and is yet to score a goal for Rangers.

The forward has largely been a backup to Bojan Miovski and is yet to start a Premiership game.

Despite this, Rohl chose to start the Portugal Under-21 international, having previously started him in the defeats against Genk and Sturm Graz.

However, Chermiti failed to impress again and missed a chance from Nicolas Raskin’s cross.

Rohl, who took charge of his first match against Brann, said: “I think before I go into this question, I think this is exactly the part, we can speak now about individual performance.

“But our performance as a group was not good today, and I think this is what I will try.

“I took him today because I saw a very last high line, and he has power, he can go deep, I think that was the reason why I took him.

“Yeah, but again I come back to the key message today, important is the team performance.”

Rohl, who took over as manager earlier this week, has acknowledged that he has a tough task ahead of him in reviving Rangers’ fortunes.

Despite the club’s recent struggles, Rohl is optimistic about the potential within the squad.

He added: “I see a lot of potential, what we have to improve, I think this is very important to understand, and this is what I told my players as well.

“I want to see that every individual playesr tried everything to make this step forward, and this is my job.

“I took this job over to develop them and improve them, and we have to do it as individuals but also as a group, and there are a lot of things we can do.”
