Ex-Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa return on the cards as word reaches board rooms

Marcelo Bielsa could be set to return to the Premier League, almost four years after he left Leeds United.

In October, Bielsa attended a Leeds fan event in Malaysia, with the Argentine clearly still holding great affection for his former club.

The 70-year-old led the Whites to the Premier League during his time at the club, and achieved a historic ninth-place finish in the 2020-21 season.

Bielsa is under pressure as the head coach of Uruguay, after his side were smashed 5-1 by the United Stats in a friendly on Wednesday.

But in an incredible press conference after the game, Bielsea reiterated his desire to lead Uruguay to the World Cup next summer.

Almost all of Bielsa’s promotion-winning Leeds team from 2020 are now elsewhere, with the exceptions of Illan Meslier, Pascal Struijk, and Jack Harrison.

That team dominated the Championship under the Argentine, winning 28 games and earning 93 points to lift the title at the end of the season.

But it was the following season in the Premier League that really brought Bielsa‘s tactics to the world stage.

Leeds were an attacking and pressing force, brilliant to watch, with the likes of Patrick Bamford and Stuart Dallas starring as the Whites finished just two points behind Arsenal.

It all fell apart in the following season, however, with Bielsa sacked in February 2022 following four consecutive losses that had seen Leeds concede 17 goals.

But the 70-year-old could now be set for a return to the Premier League, with Alan Nixon reporting to his Patreon on Sunday that the manager may quit his job with Uruguay after the World Cup.

That word has reached boardrooms in the Premier League, with clubs due for a managerial change next summer sure to register their interest.

The prospect of Bielsa managing another club within the Premier League would be an uncomfortable one for Leeds fans, who will retain hope that the Argentine may make his return to Elland Road.

What Bielsa told Leeds fans when he left

Bielsa was finally given a chance to say a proper goodbye to the Leeds fans in a special meeting nine months after his sacking.

One hundred fans were able to attend the emotional occasion, where the Elland Road favourite reflected on his time at Leeds.

“I would have given it all to end it in a better way,” he told fans. “I don’t think I deserve the recognition you give me, if I didn’t tell you this, I wouldn’t be honest with you. I still felt loved and respected even if we were in a negative phase.

“One of the strongest emotions of a human being, is being loved and loving unconditionally. What I received from you Leeds supporters is much more than I deserve.”

The timing may well be off for a reunion, with Daniel Farke, on current form, unlikely to see out the season. Should the chance be offered, however, Leeds fans would undoubtedly want it to be taken in an instant.
