Rangers had a great chance to pick up their first win in the Europa League this season as they led 10-man Sporting Braga 1-0 at Ibrox on Thursday night, but the Gers faithful and Danny Rohl endured another disappointing outcome.
The Glasgow giants came into the match at Ibrox against the Portuguese side having lost all four of their games in the competition this term, but hopes were high when James Tavernier put them in the lead from the penalty spot.
When Rodrigo Zalazar was sent off for the visitors in the second half, Rangers had a prime opportunity to take all three points – just eight minutes later Braga were level.
For the umpteenth time in 2025-26, the defence looked suspect and after Nasser Djiga misjudged a cross, Braga were level and that was how the game ended.
Youssef Chermiti is ‘Mind-Blowingly Bad’
While Rangers’ defence rightly came under scrutiny on Thursday night, the Ibrox outfit didn’t look particularly great going forward either given they played for more than 30 minutes with an extra man.
Youssef Chermiti was signed by Kevin Thelwell for £8m during the summer transfer window, and following the sporting director’s exit earlier this week, the striker looks to be his biggest mistake of a disastrous period of recruitment which included the loan addition of Djiga.
Following the Portuguese attacker’s big-money move from Everton, the 21-year-old has contributed just one goal and one assist in 14 appearances in all competitions for Gers, and has struggled to nail down a spot in the starting XI in the Scottish Premiership.
Thursday night was another chance for Chermiti to finally make his mark and show why Thelwell paid so much for him, but there are still no signs of that happening.
Journalist Jonny McFarlane said post-match, via his X account, that the centre-forward is ‘mind-blowingly bad’ and ‘offers nothing’, and would be classed as a bad signing if he had cost £2m, let alone £8m.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s hard to argue against that.
Rangers require big changes to this squad in January and next summer to get them back on track, and Chermiti needs to be one of the first out of the door as Rohl is being given very little to work with.
If they can offload him in January – even at a loss – it should be done, and if that is to happen he should never play for Rangers again.
More Rangers Players in Huge Danger
As well as Chermiti, there simply has to be more question marks over a number of other players who arrived at Ibrox during the summer transfer window.
The aforementioned Djiga has been a disaster but may have to continue in the side for now following the injury to Derek Cornelius.
The Wolves loanee isn’t up to standard though, and Rangers surely have to consider seeing if they can break the season-long loan agreement they have with the Premier League club in January.

Full-back Max Aarons is another loanee who has struggled for form and confidence, and like Djiga the Scottish club should look to try and terminate his loan from Bournemouth as soon as possible.
The list continues though, with Joe Rothwell, Oliver Antman, Thelo Aasgaard and Bojan Miovski among other new faces failing to make the grade at Ibrox.
A squad overhaul is desperately needed at Rangers with most of their 13 summer signings disappointing, and that should start by putting Chermiti up for sale.
